  • Duca gained attention in December 2016 for an op-ed in Teen Vogue titled “Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America.”
  • argued that then-President-elect Donald Trump used deception to undermine the truth, causing his critics to doubt their own judgment.
  • As of December 23, 2016, the essay had been viewed 1.2 million times, making it the most-viewed post on the magazine’s website.
  • The Washington Post’s Katie Mettler wrote, “The Internet lit up with praise for Duca’s’scorched-earth’ op-ed.”  The essay was widely regarded as a watershed moment in the fashion magazine’s history, with a newly acknowledged political dimension.
  • Duca appeared on Tucker Carlson’s show. Tonight, December 23, 2016,15, during a heated exchange about her comments on Ivanka Trump, Duca criticized host Tucker Carlson for not allowing her to speak and referred to Carlson as a “partisan hack.” In response, he advised her to “stick to the thigh-high boots” instead of political commentary, referring to her previous articles on pop star Ariana Grande. Duca was subjected to online harassment, including threats of sexual assault.
  • In response, Duca titled her new Teen Vogue column, which debuted in February 2017, “Thigh-High Politics.”
  • “Thigh High Politics” “[broke] down the news, provides resources for the resistance, and just generally refuses to accept toxic nonsense,” according to the magazine. In addition, in July 2017, she designed a t-shirt with the phrase “I like my politics thigh-high” and donated all of the proceeds from each $32 shirt to Planned Parenthood in Carlson’s honor. Over $10,000 had been raised as of December 2017.  In the face of backlash against Teen Vogue, Duca has defended the website’s political commentary, citing the disconnect between critics who dismiss young women’s interests as too trivial for intellectual discourse and the reprimands young women face for not participating in the political process.
  • Former pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli attempted to contact Duca several times in 2017 and frequently mentioned her on social media. Shkreli messaged Duca directly, tweeted her directly, edited a collage of Duca for his Twitter banner, and superimposed his face on top of an image of Duca and her then-husband to use as his profile photo in early January 2017. Duca expressed her displeasure with Shkreli’s advances on Twitter, where she posted a screenshot of a direct message from Shkreli inviting her to Donald Trump’s inauguration with the caption, “I would rather eat my own organs.”  Duca also used her appearance to post screenshots of Shkreli’s Twitter profile, asking the platform’s founder and CEO Jack Dorsey how Shkreli’s actions were permitted.
  • Shkreli’s Twitter account was then suspended for violating the website’s anti-targeted harassment policy.  On July 28, 2017, Duca issued a Twitter statement about Shkreli’s securities-fraud trial and his sexual comments during a Facebook Livestream. “I would (still) rather eat my own organs,” Duca tweeted. If you even touch me, I’ll gladly chop off one of yours.”
  • On February 21, 2018, Duca tweeted in response to Billy Graham’s death, “The big news today is that Billy Graham was still alive this whole time.” Anyway, have a good time in hell, bitch.” Her post sparked some criticism on the internet. [30] “The Fox article and segment on my stupid tweet are really miraculous in their bad-faith consternation,” Duca said in response to Fox News’ coverage of her tweet. Billy Graham described homosexuality as a “sinister form of perversion” and proposed that “AIDS is a punishment from God.” If hell exists, that’s exactly where he’ll end up.”
  • Duca was announced as a visiting scholar at New York University’s journalism department in May 2018.
  • Duca taught a six-week course titled “The Feminist Journalist” there in the summer of 2019. The class, which was taught through the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, focused on the intersections of feminist ideology and the practice of journalism and was attended by high school and college students.  Students sent a collective formal complaint to the school’s journalism department four weeks after the course regarding Duca’s conduct during the class, writing, “We are disappointed at the department and NYU for hiring a professor who is more interested in promoting her book than teaching a group of students eager to learn.” Students claim Duca singled out an exchange student, writing that she “consistently targeted this student on the basis of a communication difficulty that the student cannot change.”
  • Duca published her first book, How to Start a Revolution: Young People and the Future of American Politics, in September 2019.
